About Hanil Express
Hanil Express is a Seoul-based transport company that runs express buses and car ferries at the same time, the only Korean express bus operator that also carries passengers by sea. The company started in April 1970 as Hanil Express Bus, took its shipping licence in 1977 and has kept a foot in coastal ferry traffic ever since. Its bus network stretches from Seoul to Busan, Gwangju and Wando, which is why the bus-and-ferry combination to Jeju works so well: the Seoul - Wando Port coach ends at the ferry terminal.
The ships to Jeju
Two car ferries serve the crossing. The Silver Cloud entered service in 2018: 160 metres long, 20,263 tons, 1,180 passengers and 343 cars, a service speed of 21 knots. The Gold Stella followed in 2020, the same length at 21,989 tons, 1,029 passengers and 343 cars. Cabin classes run from open economy rooms for 18 to 45 people through berth cabins for one to four up to suites; the Gold Stella adds royal suites with a terrace, family rooms and capsule bunks. Both ships have a café, a convenience store, a kids room, massage chairs and an outdoor pet zone; the Gold Stella also carries a restaurant. For a crossing of 2 hours 40 minutes an economy seat is enough, a cabin is comfort rather than necessity.
The Wando - Jeju crossing
Wando - Jeju is the shortest car ferry corridor to the island, 104 kilometres in about 2 hours 40 minutes, with up to three departures a day in each direction all year. Hanil used to sail from Yeosu as well; that line ended in December 2024 and the Gold Stella has been on the Wando run since January 2025. The Wando terminal is at Jangbogo-daero 339, five minutes by taxi from the town's bus terminal; on Jeju the ships use the two terminals in Jeju City port, the international terminal at Imhang-ro 191 and the coastal terminal at Imhang-ro 111. Which ship uses which terminal is printed on the ticket, so read it before you order the taxi.
Check-in, vehicle and pet
Vehicles check in from 90 minutes before departure and must be in the lane 30 minutes before sailing; foot passengers collect their ticket with ID and reservation name, and ticketing and boarding close 10 minutes before departure. Every passenger passes an ID check, passport or residence card, and Hanil recommends arriving about an hour early. Cars, motorbikes and bicycles all cross; lowered vehicles under 15 cm ground clearance are refused and vehicles over one ton need a weight certificate. Paid parking at the Wando terminal is available by the day if you leave the car behind. Pets travel in their own carrier and are booked into the pet rooms of either ship; the Silver Cloud also has pet-friendly cabins for four or six.
Tickets
Tickets are sold online, by phone and at the terminal counters; international travellers usually book through the booking window on the route page. Fares are per person by cabin class with the vehicle priced on top by class; a fuel surcharge applies and weekends and Korean holidays carry a premium. The current amounts per class are on the prices page, the departures in the timetable.
