About Namhae Gosok Ferry

Namhae Gosok is a Mokpo shipping company with a long history on Korea's south-west coast. It goes back to a trading firm founded in Mokpo in December 1955; the ferry company itself was set up in October 1977 with its licence for scheduled passenger routes, and its first fast boats to the island of Hongdo followed in 1978. The Jeju business is younger: a car ferry from Yeosu started in 2000, and the Goheung (Nokdong) - Jeju line opened in March 2004. The head office is on the third floor of the coastal passenger terminal in Mokpo, with branches in the Nokdong terminal and in the Jeju coastal terminal.

The ship: Arion Jeju

Since 2018 the Jeju run has been served by the Arion Jeju, a car ferry of 6,266 tons, 145.6 metres long and 22 metres wide, launched in 2002. She carries 818 passengers at a service speed of 21.5 knots and is a straightforward Korean coastal ferry: open seating rooms in third class, smaller cabin rooms and beds above, a kiosk for snacks and drinks, an open deck with a long view of the Goheung islands on the way out. The rest of the fleet, the fast boats Namhae Queen, Pink Dolphin, New Angel, New Dolphin and New Queen, works the Mokpo - Hongdo - Heuksando - Gageodo routes.

The Nokdong - Jeju crossing

Nokdong - Jeju takes about 3 hours 30 minutes and runs once a day in each direction, the morning departure from Nokdong and the afternoon return from Jeju. Nokdong New Port lies in Goheung county at Bibong-ro 266-16, a rural corner of the south coast about ninety minutes from Suncheon; on Jeju the ship docks at the coastal passenger terminal at Imhang-ro 111 in Jeju City, a short taxi ride from the centre and the bus terminal.

Check-in, ID and vehicle

The operator asks vehicles to arrive 60 to 90 minutes before departure and foot passengers 60 minutes before; vehicle loading closes 20 minutes before sailing, passenger boarding 10 minutes before. Ticketing needs the names, dates of birth and contact details of everyone travelling, and every passenger shows an ID at the counter and again at the gangway, passport or residence card for foreign travellers. Vehicles are entered with the booking, presented with the loading form at the ramp and lashed by the crew; the driver then walks back to the terminal and boards as a foot passenger. Cargo vehicles need their registration and a weighing certificate.

Tickets and cancellation

Tickets are sold at the terminal counters and through the Korean booking services; international travellers book online in advance through the booking window on the route page. Fares are per person in classes from third-class floor space to first-class beds, plus vehicle fares by class and a fuel surcharge; the current amounts are on the prices page. Cancellation costs 10 percent the day before departure, 20 percent on the day before sailing and 50 percent after departure, within two days; weather cancellations are refunded in full. Departures are in the timetable.
